What is Niu Lai about?
On the grassland, a newborn calf named Niu Lai enters a dream with a skylark arriving from the desert. The bird witnesses the calf learn to face danger and care for others. This is the premise in Maoyan's film synopsis.
The story is a coming-of-age fable. If you found the film through a meme or a cinema drawing, the character guide helps put names to the animals, while the hand-drawn poster gallery shows how cinemas interpreted them.

The dream journey
The calf struggles to stand, and his mother's encouragement gives him his name. In the dream, he fears snakes and crossing water, befriends a young leopard, and faces separation as prejudice divides the herd. During migration, wolves attack; his mother sacrifices herself to protect him. These losses push him to take responsibility for others.
Was it all a dream?
Yes. The adventure ends when Niu Lai wakes up: the dangers and sacrifices belong to the dream. The reversal brings him back to his ordinary life with a new sense of courage. This summary follows GamerSky's August 18 plot recap.
What does the ending mean?
Our reading: the dream rehearses growing up. Niu Lai does not need to become an invincible hero for his first act of courage to matter. That is an interpretation, rather than a statement from the filmmakers.
